World Leading Global Ageing Scientists Meet Nicolas De Santis

World Leading Global Ageing Scientists Meet Nicolas De Santis

One of the world’s leading gerontology scientists, Dr. Craig Willcox and neurology and brain ageing scientist, Dr. Giovanni Scapagnini visited Gold Mercury International to present their work and discuss critical global health challenges in the areas of ageing, global nutrition and brain disease.

They met with Nicolas De Santis, President of Gold Mercury International to discuss GLOGO (Gold Mercury’s Global Governance Model and Centre for Sustainable Globalisation), as part of a series of talks that Gold Mercury is conducting in order to advance global governance with prominent scientists.

“Global health is one of the key areas that we monitor in our global governance model (GLOGO) and within it, population ageing and neurodegenerative diseases are areas that are significantly affecting the world. We believe that global scientific collaboration among scientists via the development of networks and increased data sharing is crucial for advancing and speeding up the creation of solutions to global health challenges and accelerating the power of research,” said Nicolas de Santis, President of Gold Mercury.

Dr. Willcox is an internationally recognised expert in healthy ageing and cross-cultural gerontology, with training in medical anthropology, gerontology and public health sciences. He is currently a Professor at Japan’s Okinawa International University and a Co-Principal Investigator at the Okinawa Centenarian Study. Dr. Willcox is also Research Associate at The University of Hawaii’s Faculty of Medicine, Pacific Health Research Institute, where he is a co-investigator on several NIH projects exploring the genetic epidemiology of healthy ageing. He is also researcher in residence at Okinawa Research Center for Longevity Science. Among his broad range of academic and scientific activities, his current research focuses on the interconnection between ageing and the disability process among the oldest in Okinawa and Hawaii.

Dr. Scapagnini sits on the International Advisory Board of Gold Mercury International. He currently holds two academic positions as Assistant Professor with the Institute of Neurological Sciences, Italian National Research Council and with Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute, West Virginia University. His areas of research include gene expression profiles of cellular stress response and biology and molecular mechanisms of brain ageing and neurodegenerative disorders. More specifically, he has studied the anti-ageing activities of several nutraceuticals present in the Mediterranean diet. Nicolas De Santis, President of Gold Mercury also sits on the board of the Global Virus Network (GVN), the global alliance of the top global virology centres co-founded by Prof. Robert Gallo. GVN centres work together to advance virology research and solutions in the world.

“Gold Mercury’s intelligence on globalisation and specially GLOGO, their unique global governance model is a visionary approach to re-invent the way we see global challenges and how we can organise our world. GLOGO does not look at global areas as fixed separate compartments but as an interconnected system that is constantly changing. This model can provide a lot of clues as to how to improve decision-making, governance and collaboration to solve global challenges in health and other areas,” said Dr. Giovanni Scapagnini.

Vint Cerf, Father of the Internet and Google’s Chief Internet Evangelist Meets Nicolas De Santis

Vint Cerf, Father of the Internet and Google’s Chief Internet Evangelist Meets Nicolas De Santis

Vint Cerf, the world renowned computer scientist, visited Gold Mercury International’s London Offices to meet with its President, Nicolas De Santis.

Both Mr Cerf and Mr De Santis serve on the board of the Global Virus Network (GVN). The GVN is a coalition of the world’s best virologists, who are working together to advance knowledge on how viruses make us sick and how to prepare against new viral pandemic threats. The GVN includes 33 centres of excellence in all medically important viruses spread over 21 different countries, each directed by a recognised expert in human viral diseases. These directors are world renowned, with almost 100 awards being given to GVN Centre Directors and Scientific Leadership Board members for outstanding contributions to medical virology. Led by Robert Gallo M.D., the co-discoverer of the HIV Virus, GVN is a global authority and resource for the identification, investigation, control and suppression of viral diseases posing threats to mankind.

Vint Cerf is widely regarded as the ‘father of the Internet’, responsible for helping to develop the TCP/IP protocols which serve as the main structure of the web. Mr Cerf began his career at the United States Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), where he played a key role in developing the Internet and related technologies.

Mr Cerf has been honoured with numerous prestigious awards recognising his career achievements. These include the U.S. National Medal of Technology, the ACM Alan M. Turing Awards (often called the ‘Nobel Prize of Computer Science’), the Presidential Medal of Freedom and he holds more than a dozen honorary degrees.

In his current role as Google’s Chief Internet Evangelist, Mr Cerf is dedicated to thinking about the future of the Internet, including its use in space. At their meeting Mr Cerf and Mr De Santis discussed Mr Cerf’s numerous and wide-ranging projects which includes developing the interplanetary Internet. Working with NASA and Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Mr Cerf has helped develop a new set of protocols which can stand up to the unique environment of space, where orbital mechanics and the speed of light make traditional networking extremely difficult. Though this space-based network is still in its early stages, Mr Cerf has said that we are now at “the front end of what could be an evolving and expanding interplanetary backbone.”

Vint Cerf is currently working on the interplanetary internet.

During their meeting, Mr De Santis presented to Mr Cerf, GLOGO®: Gold Mercury’s Global Governance Centre for Sustainable Globalisation. GLOGO’s unique framework includes a monitoring and rating system to organise world complexity and report on the impact of major decisions and events on the future of our world. Mr Cerf and Mr De Santis discussed global population growth and the future of global resources; notably the critical importance of energy security and water as two of mankind’s most important challenges.

Nicolas De Santis, President of Gold Mercury stated: “Vint is a very special individual who spends his time envisioning the future, as well as thinking about how to improve humanity’s access to information and networks, both in our planet and beyond. Our discussion was one of the most exciting I have ever had; ranging from the future of water in our planet and the interplanetary internet, to how we can terraform other planets to make them more similar in biosphere to earth, so that they can be habitable by humans in the future. You can’t beat that!”
